If you are new to my blog, or haven’t had a chance to tune-in in a while, I have started a weekly “Getting Personal” blog, where I update you on what’s happening in my life. To kick-start the posts, I asked you guys (friends, family, clients, fellow photographers, strangers) to post any questions that you would like for me to address during these posts. I have had MANY thought-provoking questions…funny questions…spiritual questions…simple questions…business questions….etc.
Today, I’m going to continue with the tradition and answer a few that were posted under last week’s personal post.
Question from Sarah Baldwin:
1. My main question to you, is this: how important is your creativity to you? Is it right up there with food and shelter? If suddenly you were stripped of all ability to create anything artistic ever again, could you even go on living?
This was a tough one….could I LIVE without creativity. My immediate answer was “No, there’s no way on this earth that I could live without being creative,” but then I started really thinking about it…could I live without the ability to create something artistic? So, after much contemplation (and googling) …my answer is still “no”. I realize that I am wired as a creative person…whether it’s music, photography, or art, I’m simply created by God to create artistic things. It’s who I am…and I LOVE it!
2. What’s holding you back from achieving the next level or accomplishing your next artistic mission?
Wow….it’s funny that you ask.
If you read my last blog post, you would see that I am running a contest to win a free photo shoot. The idea was inspired by Scott Bourne and Dane Sanders. It was a webinar on building your photography business. The big issue that addressed my current circumstance the most was the same question you asked, “what’s holding you back from becoming what you dream, ” and one of the biggest answers is “insecurity”. I’m not the only one who has them, I’m sure every new business owner gets faced daily with the same discouraging thoughts like “you’re not good enough”, or “there’s so many other great photographers out there”, “no one will nationally recognize a little Greenville photographer”.
Luckily, I serve a big God, I have big dreams, and I’m like the little engine that could. I have no doubt in my mind that I will reach my goals, but I definitely struggle with the “fear” questions that circulate through my brain daily.
Question from Rachael Smith
1. If you could have dinner with anyone dead or alive, who would it be and why?
Wow…a billion names went through my head, but I’m going to keep it simple: I would have dinner with my memamma. She just passed away this time last year, and I would love for her to make me laugh again. I loved watching her, my mom, and my aunts laugh so hard they cried. She is a remarkable woman.
2. Since someone asked what your weaknesses are, what do you think your strengths are?
Strengths: (these are always hard, because I’m always scared that people think I’m being prideful…but since you asked:
Personality: I was raised by insanely supportive parents. Mom was/is my best friend and she always found ways to challenge me to be a better person (loving, compassionate, friendly).
Determination: I am never satisfied with my current work. I’m always striving to get better. I spend a lot of time experimenting with new Photoshop techniques and I try to attend as many online webinars as possible. I have a big dream, and I know that I have to put in a LOT of extra hours to achieve those dreams.
3. What are some of the future goals for your photography business? (I don’t think anyone asked that yet, haha)
My passion is to do high-end weddings on the east coast. I love to travel, so I love doing destination weddings.
I would love to travel the U.S. teaching photography workshops
I would love to have some of my work published in local and national magazines
I would love to travel the world, photographing mission organizations to raise awareness of the work that is taking place in other countries
I’ve even had the thought of writing a book in the very very very (far way) future
***I told you…BIG dreams!
By the way, Rachael and her brother own and operate Univertee Apparel. Their shirt designs are amazing. If you are on facebook and you go to ECU (or go to their games), you’ve probably seen advertisements for Nov. 5th’s Blackout game. Check out their blackout shirts…wouldn’t it be insane to see all of ECU in black!

Alright, that’s enough about me. Before I go, here’s a pic Shane took of me this week. I was trying to get an awesome shot of me rockin’ my Panthers jersey, but I looked goofy in all the pictures. But, here’s one of my favorites.
